During the early day of the Great Sky War, a plethora of trade route raidings and minor skirmishes occurred vastly all over the Viridian Ring.
It has been proven to Republic that vessels available to the military garrison at the time could not react fast enough to immediate threats. On the other hand, faster smaller ships are not capable of putting up a fight against the Aecerlian and the Teutonic raiding parties. The Courser is an answer to a call for a fast response garrison ship that is fast enough to reinforce an ongoing battle while still possessing enough firepower and durability to repel and delay aggressors expecting to raid settlements and supply lines. With the design's emphasis on being a short-range combat-oriented vessel, the internal storage space was reduced to give way to guns and armor.
